Photographer brand shoot in Houston, Texas
The way that I see it, wedding & portrait photographers almost need brand photos more than anybody else. As a wedding photographer myself, I know how much we preach that it's so important to get in front of the camera to document this phase of your life. So why aren't we doing this ourselves? We should be putting our money where our mouth is! Kaley had that exact thought. If she was going to be speaking about the important aspects of getting in front of the lens, capturing memories, and having these authentic and meaningful photos for years to come, she needed a branding shoot!
She wanted her branding session to include all of the things she loves so the images spoke to her ideal client. She loves all things french, the color pink, fresh flowers, coffee, her personal family photos, and last-but-certainly-not-least, her amazing corgi Colbi who is the cutest wiggly fluff butt I have ever seen. Kaley didn't want her shoot to be in your face, "hey-look-at-me-I'm-a-photographer" with a camera around her neck the whole time. Instead she wanted more of a lifestyle portrait session vibe, surrounded by the things she loves. She wanted portions of it to look almost like a dressier version of hanging out in her living room. Kaley was inspired by Madewell & Kinfolk lookbooks, with authentic & minimal visuals with some double exposures and motion blur thrown in there. Here is the initial mood board I created to help her visualize how her session ideas translated into my head:
We met up at an amazing indoor studio space in Houston that Kaley rented out for the day, The West Studios, which had the perfect light for the ideas we wanted to execute. She had just come from Kiss by Katie, who enhanced Kaley's natural beauty and had her looking like a rockstar. I mean, c'mon- get out of here with those perfect curls! We started with coffee, which is how Kaley starts her productive days as a wedding and portrait photographer. We then moved into the living room scene that we staged where she got Colbi snuggles and kisses. The next parts of the shoot were so fun and included lots of movement, double exposures, and laughs.
For those photographers wondering how a branding session should work for you, this is definitely a route that I would recommend. It's like a hands on lifestyle session that make great content for those "Friday Introduction" posts on Instagram or other social media outlets, sprinkled throughout your website, and perfect for your printed collateral to attract new clients & meet with potential clients.
